The
BOTANY CLUB had its
earnest beginning in the
year 1960-61 under the headship of Dr. K. R. Venkata Subban. The first
batch of
final post graduate and second batch of post graduate students along
with staff
constituted the Club. The subscription for the membership was rupees
five.
The
botany club, a visionary
venture by Dr. K. R.
Venkata Subban was aimed to create a platform for the student members
of the
club to eliminate stage fear, interact amidst group and learn and share
knowledge beyond horizons.
The
seminars not only created
accumulation of
knowledge in a given topic, both to the presenter and the listener, but
also invoked
competitive spirit among the students. Apart from Madras Christian
College in
association with University of Madras only two other colleges, namely
The
Pachaiyappa College and The Presidency College offered post graduate
course in
botany. Hence this forum kindled the students to acquire information
and knowledge
by referring to books and journals from various libraries. Being
prestigious
platform to pass through students were motivated to work beyond class
hours with
clear objectives that included research in laboratory and accurate
documentation.
Fifty
one years of
uninterrupted functioning clearly
conveys the importance attributed to the BOTANY Club by all the Heads
who
have succeeded
and the staff who have functioned as President of the Club in rotation.
Students
undergoing post graduate from the department, staff from Madras
Christian
College and guest from various bodies have ignited the minds and dished
out commendable
contents some of which had fierce debates too. The nervous beginning
that many
a student had would still remain nostalgic. For a few this launch pad
has sky rocketed
them to rewarding careers.
With
more than doubling of
student enrollment in the
PG classes the single seminar each Friday afternoon has evolved into
multiple
seminars on a given day with prior intimation.. Simultaneously the
black
board and
chalk with charts and diagrams have paved way to electronic
presentation with
colorful and captivating images and videos to create a lasting impact
on the
listener.
The
50th
and 51st
year of the BOTANY
CLUB witnessed several interesting programmes that included
felicitations for Prof. Dr. K. Venkattasubban and Prof. Crispin
Devadas. Further several eminent scientists and academicians from
various fields have delivered lectures and ignited the young minds to
understand and pursue research.
